Volvo: COLD HARD STARTING, coolant temperature sensor, intake air temperature sensor

Question
QUESTION: Hi Ray - I have a 2002 V40 with about 110,000 miles on it.  Just recently after the car was sitting for about 4 days, the car is hard to start only when cold.  After it starts and runs for a few minutes, it is fine for the rest of the day and after the car sits for about 6-8 hrs, the same situation happens.  When I start it I have to step on the gas pedal just a little (enough to crack open the throttle body).  Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.
ANSWER: Dana,
First read any codes and attend to those see what happens. Put a fuel gauge on the car when you turn it off and then when you go back in 6-8 hours see if you have fuel pressure when you turn the key on and when you begin to crank. Has the vehicle had a recent tune, if not do that and also change the fuel filter.

QUESTION: Hi Ray - thanks for the starting point.  If the pressure drops than does that point to fuel pump - another thing in question is the coolant temperature sensor or intake air temperature sensor (iat).  I'll do the tune-up (spark plugs basically) and change the fuel filter also.  Thanks!

Answer
Dana,
If the pressure over a few hours drops, nothing to worry about. If it drops in an hour then there is a check valve problem a leaking injector bad pressure regulator or other leak. If there are sensors going bad there will be stored codes in the system. Any devation from perset standard reading will be stored as a fault.
