Volvo: 1991 740 turbo will not start, neutral safety switch, car wont start

Question
I have a 1991 740 turbo that is truly causing me problems. a couple of months ago I noticed a fluctuating thermostat gauge on the dashboard. Then a couple of days later the RPM gauge would drop and rise while the in in drive but my foot is on the brake, eventually the car would die and it would take me awhile to start it. Also i noticed that if the car died on my while driving i could not start the car in neutral. Are volvo's equipped to start in neutral like most cars or is this another indicator of the problem?. Now the car wont start at all, it doesn't sound like it is getting gas to the engine. I have had the MAF changed, the spark plugs and wires and the rotter,,, any advice?

Answer
Anthony,
The engine should crank over in neutral, so there maybe a fault in the neutral safety switch. See if there are any codes stored in the system and follow those out. Put a fuel pressure gauage on and see if when the car stalls it is a lack of fuel, or not. Then you could look for ignition related things like the power stage, flywheel pick up, injection or radio supperssion relay.
