Volvo: Reset Check Engine light, shady tree, error codes

Question
Hello, I've tried the procedure suggested and have not been able to get it to work after several attempts.
I have a 1999 S80, when I press the Odometer trip button with the key in the ignition, turn to position 1 for two second then to position 11, the service light flashes 5 times then goes out. My question is what to do after it flashes? Should I release the button after 3 blinks? or 5? Or do I continue holding it in? Then what do I do with the key position? Start the car? Turn the key off, then start. Turn key off, remove from ignition, then start?

Also could there be a condition that would cause this light to not reset?

I have 3 error codes, Service air bag, Emissions Service required, and a bulb out.
Could these conditions effect the reset?

Thanks for all your help and info, it's greatly appreciated by some of us shady tree mechanics
who are still trying to do it in this age of technology.

Answer
Tom,
What you described was the method used to reset the "service" light not the check engine light. The faults that you have displayed will need to be repaired and then as long as no other faults are posted the light will then be able to reset. To know exactly what needs to be repaired the codes need to be read and all faults repaired, as it needs to be fault free for the light to remain off.
