Volvo: Volvo rear suspension, independent rear suspension, rear shocks

Question
I have a 1990 960 and it has 180K miles.  The back is drooping and the local mechanic said it's dangerous to drive on the highway and the rear suspension needs totally replaced.  Struts (which is strange b/c I didn't know there were struts in back) springs, etc are all wore out.  He quoted me $2500-$3500 and said don't bother, just get a new car.  Help we love this car it's been so reliable.

Answer
Hello! Are you sure it is a 960? There was a 760 in 1990 but not a 960. If the car has an independent rear suspension. You may just need to replace the rear shocks. They are a special (nivomat) load leveling shock. The cost for the shock can be around $300 each. There is an aftermarket kit available that will replace both rear shocks and springs for less than the nivomat shocks. Go to www.ipdusa.com to get more info on the kit.
