Volvo: drivetrain vibration, drivetrain, vibration

My '89 245 has a severe drivetrain vibration - the whole car shakes really - when decelerating starting at about 20mph to stopping; this happens wether the clutch is engaged or not and never during acceleration.

I do not know what your question is. If it's about what is the cause of your vibration, it will need to be looked at and felt. Then the car can be racked and inspected. Bushings, driveshaft bearing, u-joints all are able to make a vehicle vibrate.
