Volvo: 1982 Volvo Fuel Problems, catalatic converter, volvo dealer

Question
Hi.  I'm a bit lost with my car. I'm just learning and I've already
tried two mechanics... both which have given up on the car.
Symptoms: 1. The car stalls on deceleration...sometimes. 2. Car
doesn't have power when pressing on gas pedal/ then moves all
of a sudden....sometimes. 3. Car sometimes feels like it
accelerates (on its own) suddenly while driving during what
appears to be an otherwise fine ride. 4. When car loses power it
is often accompanied by a rattling noise coming from engine. If I
turn off car, noise goes away, and power comes back. Any ideas?
I've already changed tank fuel pump, idle control valve, fuel
injector seals, and cleaned throttle body.  The relay appears to
be new with no burns or cracks.  Fuses also seem cool.   It
seems like a fuel pressure problem.

What kind of setup is used to diagnose this? Should I break
down and go to a Volvo dealer that will work on old cars?
Thanks so much.

Answer
Robert,
It might be a good idea to seek out some help, but the rattling sound! Does your car have a catalatic converter on it? The rattling could be a sign of the cat breaking up inside and clogging the exhaust system causing the loss of power. Tap on the cat and see if it rattles meaning that it is breaking up inside. If that fails some help might be in order.
