Volvo: 1997 Volvo 960 starting problems, 1997 volvo 960, volvo 960

Question
My 1997 Volvo 960 with 235,000 miles is not starting at this time. In June, some rough starts other wise ran fine. One day at a stop sign, the car would accelerate and idle high. Turned off car, would not start. Towed to mechanic and main computer was replaced with after market computer. Since then, would have difficulty starting, especially after sitting for several hours such as in the morning. Would take at least 3 tries to get it to start and would be rough to start, then run fine. If car sat off for a couple hours, would restart no problem, after several hours however, at least 3 times to start and would run fine. One day started hearing a "whizzing" sound when driving, which would be heard when put in neutral, and not when gears were shifting. The next day, the car would not start, engine tried to turn over, but rough, bucked and stopped. Then would not start. Lights, radio etc work, but when you turn the ingition, get one click and then nothing. Nothing at all. I changed out the battery as it was old, and still nothing. What do you think? the starter? bad fuel pump? I am trying to figure out if it is worth towing and fixing. Thanks.

Answer
John,
Sound like some big problems have come your way. Now it is time to get the car to a Volvo shop and get some advice. Maybe an engine will be your best bet. Have it looked at to know that it's really dead. The way you say it sounds when you try to turn it over make me think of timing belt problems.
