Volvo: Alarm/central locking problems 850GLT sedan, burglar alarm system, door locks

Question
Ray,

I purchased my 1995 Volvo 850GLT knowing it had seen better days, it now has about 99k miles. My battery recently died, and the car stalled with all doors unlocked and some of the windows down. My mechanic replaced the battery and I didnt have any problems leaving the shop. When I parked the car and locked the driver side door, I noticed the other doors did not lock. After several attemps, I opened the door to see if starting would help and the factory installed burglar alarm system went into alarm, preventing the car from starting. My alarm remote does not work, nor have I ever had to  use it or had any alarm problems in the past.

My mechanic told me of a trick to start the car; disconnect the battery, turn the key to the on position and reconnect. Unfortunately the doors will still not centrally lock/unlock, and the alarm is enabled when I lock the driver side door. I tried removing fuse#6, no change - the alarm still enables. Aside from investing in quick-connect battery leads, do you feel I may have a short, a faulty alarm, faulty door-locks? If its a short (possible), is this a major/expensive repair?

I may try to disable the alarm via the relay under the drive-side dash, but this likely will not fix the door locks.

Your expert advice is greatly appreciated!

Regards,

MBN

Answer
Matt,
The alarm relay is used if you have an alarm in the vehicle and a by-pass relay is used without an alarm. It is relay 210. You can locate the by-pass relay are try to replace it and see if that helps. You may have a bad central locking relay number 205. I think that the by-pass relay is a 3545333.
