Volvo: 1982 Volvo 240 GLT, volvo 240 glt, volvo station wagon

Question
My daughter has a 82 Volvo Station Wagon 240 GLT 2.1 L. The Shifter is off and we cannot actually adjust the linkage (probably due to it being in need of replacement, the biggest problem is one day she parked it  then went out to drive it and there was no reverse, she said it would go forward in drive but would not back up when they put it in neutral and pushed it out of the parking space it rolled right back into the space exactly where it was parked, We towed it home and changed the fluid and filter and attempted to do the adjustments to make it actually point to drive , reverse etc... now it will only start in neutral and goes forward in everything but reverse even in drive but nothing at all in reverse. is there an affordable way to fix this or is the transmission shot? School starts in less than 2 weeks and she is stranded.

Answer
Kathy,
From the way you have stated the problem sounds like the trans is bad. I think that I would get the opinion of a Volvo tech, just in case there is a chance the linkage has slipped on the shift valve. You maybe moving the linkage but it is not moving the shift valve inside the trans.
