Volvo: 1996 Volvo 850 intermittant idle and no restart, fuel pressure gauge, volvo 850 wagon

Question
1996 Volvo 850 wagon 160K.

Hi Ray, problem is that car sometimes (intermittantly) idles very poor and then dies. 75% of the time car idles fine and no problem. If it dies from sudden poor idling- I cannot restart it for many many minutes. This is the real clue and real problem.
No CEL light and no codes logged on my pc from checking the obd2 after several occurances.

My plan of attack was
1) Replace crankposition sensor- done! no impact.
2) Clean throttle plate - done! no impact.
3 Replace idle control valve- done! no impact.
4 Ask Ray what the camshaft sensor does?
What does it do and for? Could it cause same problems as bad crank position sensor?
5 Consider replacing Air mass meter ($250 rebuilt)
6Consider replacing Main fuel injection relay- or jumper it on when I drive for a few days.?

Answer
Jim,
I would drive the car with my fuel pressure gauge on it and see if there is a loss of pressure when it idles poorly and stalls. Pumps, relays and Air mass meters do cause these problems. However the Air Mass should set a code, the fuel pump will not. The cam sensor sends a signal to the control unit for cam position and should also set a code. Usually it keeps the car from not starting not the poor idle and stalling.
