Volvo: Starter Motor Replacement Procedure, volvo v40 wagon, 2000 volvo v40

Question

-Dear Ray: I have removed the intercooler input piping--but it seems there is not enough clearance to pull the fan and shroud asssembly out. It snags on the intercooler top output manifold.I still am not clear if i need to pull the radiator/intercooler/oil cooler assy or leave it attached.-If i did that would certainly be a lot more than 1.2 hours. What could i be missing? Thanks again for your help. --------------------

Dear Mr. Niemi: Thanks for your fast and helpful response. The engine is a turbocharged 1.9 model. In order to remove the fan and shroud assembly it appears i have to remove the turbo intercooler. Can the intercooler be removed separately from the radiator or do i have to drain the radiator and remove intercooler, fan/shroud and radiator as a unit to gain access to the starter? Thank you.

I have to replace the starter motor on my 2000 Volvo V40 Wagon at 82,000 miles. What are the basic steps in chronological order. Any other tips? Thank you very much.

Answer -
Jon,
Remove the battery cable the cooling fan, disconnect the wires on the starter. Locate and loosen the brace on the end of the starter, remove the bolts holding the starter and remove.

Answer -
Jon,
If you remove the intercooler hoses that should give you the room to get the cooling fan off and out. That will allow you the room to get in at the starter. The intercooler is attached to the radiator and the A/C condenser. The radiator and the intercooler come out together, but the condenser will remain. Book time to replace the starter is 1.2 hours.

Answer
Jon,
You should be able to manuver that fan enought to remove it. As you know the time that is allowed to do that job is not very high. If all else fails get the help of a tech he may see a way to cut the time. If you need to remove the radiator and intercooler drain the radaitor and carefully remove it.
