Question -
I have  a1995 volvo 850,recently I went to the gas station to purchase gas, when i open the tank i did not hear that sound of air excaping.i thought my gas cap was bad and replaced it but i still have the same problem. My check engine light is also on

Answer -
Andrew,
It would sound as if you have a leak in the vapor system that is assocated with the tank. The system will have to be pressurized and tested for a leak. The check engine light is on because there is a code in the system. Have that code read and repair the problem.

On sunday I pulled the following codes from the system  212,222  311 and 322, can you explain these codes and what you think i should do about them. Also, do you know if this leak could be associated with the recall?

Thanks
Andrew

Answer
Andrew,

2-1-2 HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HO2S) SIGNAL
Condition(s) for DTC
The DTC is recorded if the HO2S signal does not vary from its mid-value (0.45-0.46 V) within 3 minutes after the engine temperature has exceeded 80°C (175°F) .
Substitute value
The integrator is set to mid-range and the fuel trim function is inhibited.
Fault source(s)
Open-circuit in signal lead.
Faulty HO2S heater.
Faulty HO2S.
There is no 222 in the fuel system.

3-1-1 VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) SIGNAL

Condition(s) for DTC
The MFI module is dependent on this signal for idling control, fuel cut-off etc., The DTC will be recorded if the signal is absent for 5 seconds while the engine speed is over 3000 rpm and the load signal corresponds to part load.
Substitute value
None.
Fault source(s)
Signal lead short-circuited to ground or supply.
Open-circuit in signal lead.
Faulty speedometer.
Fault in sensor circuit.
I also do not know of code 322, where did these codes come from? A2 A6? B2?
Time to get a tech with Volvo experience.
