Volvo: no subject, protective insulation, dryer vent

Question
I have a 1989 740 Turbo wagon with 240,000 miles on it.  Was planning to drive it approximately 150 miles on Monday and noticed the "dryer vent" looking metal, stretchable, hose coming out (or going into) the turbo is in bad shape.  There are 1/2" cracks on both ends.  What is this hose, and will I damage the car if I drive with it this way?  My husband "fixed it" by wrapping some rolled sheet metal around it.

Thanks for any and all help!  I hope this question about a 740 will relate to your 240 expertise.

Answer
if it doesn't cover up anything and it's 3 inches thick and goes under the radiator to the air filter it's a pre heater hose , that's not a problem in the summer.  if it covers anything up it's probably just protective insulation to keep heat away from other parts, if the car is running fine i wouldn't worry about it
