Volvo: Oil Leak, rear main oil seal, flame trap

Question
Ray,

Is this a difficult job to do it myself? I am not a mechanic but I would do it if it saves some money.

Hello Ray,

I bought a 92 Volvo 240 that had an oil leak. The person who sold me this car gave me a list a the mechanic suggested to fix. Among those things were replacing the valve and oil pan gaskets to stop an oil leak. I did that plus cleaned the flame trap and the two hoses connected to it. The next day I noticed the small tube from the flame trap housing broke, so I need to replace that.

After a test drive and I noticed the leak did not stop, so it is dropping from the back of the oil pan and the flywheel cover. Is there something else I should look for to stop this leak?

Jorge,
There is a rear main oil seal that is between the engine and the trans. You need to remove the trans and flywheel to replace it. While you are there replace the front pump seal in the trans if it is an automatic. If there are signs of leakage also replace the trans o'rings for the case and the front pump.

Answer
Jorge,
It is easy if you have the tools and a lift to pick up the car. A trans jack is also nice. All these things are what people that do these jobs everyday have to speed things up. If you are doing this job on the floor and your tools are limited, no trans jack, well the trans is heavy, not having we'll say the proper size socket or the right length extension, the job gets tough. So are you willing to work hard at this and is your knowlege limited and is your tool supply small? Maybe a shop is best.
