Volvo: car is coughing & stalling, volvo station wagon, vacuum hoses

Question
1991 volvo station wagon 5 speed manual trans
the main prob right now is that the car is coughing and sputtering a lot ... especially if you don't warm it up very much.  It could stall at a stop light, unless you are constantly revving it to keep it from dying.
bought this car 282,000 miles on it on November.
the car always starts up ... i have updated a lot of stuff / brakes, tires, water pump, clutch ... now are all new.   Altho, after some of the work...the turn sigs went out. One mechanic just taped up  the wires underneath the dash ..

Answer
some of the things that can cause this are ignition wires -dirty or not fastened down properly and getting burned by hot manifolds, dirty , worn ignition wires, loose wires (computer grounding wires) on top of engine, (probably not the problem), i would check for loose vacuum hoses on engine and all intake ducts for engine -that they are not loose or cracked-which can really wreak havoc, this includes the thick vacuum hose for brake booster. anyway i don't know if your car needs a tune up or the engine is worn or what or maybe theres a faulty sensor which is highly unlikely but possible, you should find a real good mechanic, does the car have an EGR valve ? def. check to see if you do and find out if it's stuck open, some volvos have them , mine does not
