Volvo: Volvo 250 swap., diesel engine, style engine

Question
Hello,
I have a red Volvo 250 petrol in my boat and would like to update to a less tired diesel. What engine replaced the 250, from a price point I was hoping to abtain one from a car and convert it. It is currently a 2.5 straight with approx 165 hp. What year did Volvo stop red engines?

Answer
Stuart,
Here in the United States, Volvo no longer uses a diesel engine. Penta is the Marine division of Volvo, and I do not know what type and style engine they use. I know that they are not like the diesel that was used here in the early 80's. Here in the 80's the engine was a Volkswagon, Audi, Volvo venture. Volvo used a 6 cylinder that was belt not gear  driven, and that said caused it not to a real great engine. It had belt replacement intervals of 75K miles.
