Volvo: 1993 Volvo 240 A/C, 1993 volvo 240, clutch assembly

Question
Dear Ray,

I wrote you yesterday about an A/C problem with my 1993 Volvo 240.  Today, my husband tried putting cold water on the compressor selenoid.  After he would do this, the clutch would engage and the air conditioner would start blowing cold air again.  Can you replace the selenoid without replacing the whole compressor? Can you bypass the selenoid by wiring around it?

Thanks for your help!
Sandy

Answer
Sandy,
I am not sure what you are calling the solenoid? All the compressors that I have there are the connections from the lines an electrical connection the clutch and compressor itself. Has your compressor a temp sensor in the rear of it? Is that where the water is going? You maybe better off replacing the compressor if that is the case. I have seen on the 850's a sensor in the rear of the compressor but not yet have I seen one for the 200's. To the best of my knowlege there are no replacement parts for the compressor itself, except the clutch assembly. But most of the time even if the clutch goes out a replacement compressor is used.
