Volvo: volvo 850 ac problem, replacement compressor, volvo 850

Question
the ac on my 1996 850 works fine for about an hour and then cuts off.  I can turn off the ac for about 5 minutes, let it rest , turn it back on and it will cool just fine for another hour.  my mechanic says the clutch is worn and that's the problem (just like you told one fellow).  this car has 243,000 miles.  can I just keep turning it off and on without fear of a compressor jam up and losing my belt? Thanks.

Answer
Keith,
I agree that the compressor could be at fault, that is a common problem. As of right now I have not seen any compressor on the 850's lock up and flip a belt, that is NOT common. I would guess that flipping the belt is a possibilty, so to play it safe either don't do that to ofter and /or consider a replacement compressor.
