Volvo: 1984 volvo gl station wagon, gas gauge, fuel gauge

Question
hi. just bought the volvo. it seems to have some electrical malfunction that is getting prgressively worse. the gas gauge moves but is not correct. and now the electric windows wont go up. i cant even hear them trying. wondering if it sounds like dead fuses? if that is even what they are powered by? i would like to do the work myself. sounds like a good challenge. just not totally sure where to begin.
thanks for your time

Answer
Stella,
Sometimes the electrical portion of the ignition switch will go bad. At times you might be able, while the problem is happening,to slightly turn the key back and forth and see if the windows start to work. It is a known fact that the window switch pack also goes out often. There are fuses for the windows also, don't foget to check and test those before going any further. The fuel gauge might be linked to the ignition switch. If there is not any power going to the cluster the gauge will not read. However there is a fuel sending unit in the tank that could malfunction.
