Volvo: 96 850 GTL a/c compressor, air intake, & abs/tracks lights, air intake hose, cool air intake

Question
Hello, I am trying to fine tune some issues with my 850 I'm working on and I would appreciate some experienced insight. The questions are as follows:

-The a/c compressor turns off and on in about 4 second intervals when started. This is while dials moved all to blue with a/c on of course.  The a/c has been recharged, but is not working at all really.  Is the problem possibly the compressor then or another component in the system?

-The cool air intake hose that extends from the bottom of the air cleaner housing to the grill is missing. also the temperature controlled switch air flow baffle intake body part does not work and is opened towards the air filter not the preheat tube direction.
a) how much does the air flow only in that direction effect performance, ect?
b)how much of a difference would putting an air intake tube back, or putting on a performance intake upgrade system make on fuel economy, hp, performance, ect?

-Finally, I don't need the abs/tracks system, so I’m not going to replace the probably faulty computer part, BUT I would love to get those lights to shut off on my dash.  Is there possible some way to disengage something in that abs/tracks electrical system that would make those damn lights go out?

Answer
Andreas,
Yes the A/C compressor might be going out. Do you have any pressure reading that will help? Is the compressor getting a steady flow of electricty? Some compressors have been known to stop working due to a large clutch gap. Since the clutch is so expensive, I always go for a good used unit or a new one if that is the problem.
The filter box should be relatively easy to replace as long as it is a quality filter that is made for your car. It is better that the air baffle is open toward the freah air and not the preheated air. Too much heated air will shorten the life of the Air Mass Meter. If you don't go with a new filter at least replace the air tube on to draw outside air.
Since there is a fault in the ABS the light will remain on until it burns out. This is a safety item and hence the warning lights. Most people opt for the control unit since the ABS provides a great deal of safety.
