Volvo: 94 volvo 850, free car washes, volvo 850

Question
My husband took apart the distributor cap and said that it was burnt.  We are going to replace that and see what that does.  My husband also said that it has to be something that would cause it not to spark, he also said that the spark plugs were all fine and clean and that the engine was getting gas.  It has a new ignition switch and some sensor thing.  It also has a new battery and the cables are fine.  Can the cap be the problem?  I will have the fuel pump and relay checked.  Thank you for your fast reply.

Question -
I have a 94 volvo 850 turbo.  Yesterday I drove it through one of those touch free car washes and then drove to the grocery store.  After shopping I came up it started fine drove it 50 feet to the gast station and filled up and when I went to restart it would not start.  I had it towed and then this morning my husband went out to see if he could figure it out he put the key in and turn it over and it started just fine.  What I am wondering is could I have caused this by driving it through the car wash?

Answer -
Yvonne,
I do not think the car wash had anything to do with it not starting. My guess is a fuel related problem, like pump relay or the pump itself. Unless it was not starting because it was not cranking over. In that case a faulty ignition switch or weak battery, poor cable connections to the battery.

Answer
Yvonne,
There is an Ignition coil that could be bad also. Replace the cap rotor and the wires as long as you are there. After many miles all those parts get old and should be replaced. You may also have someone read and record any stored codes in the system. That may lead to a problem also.
