Volvo: 1998 V70 Camshaft Alignment, camshaft sprockets, correct alignment

Question
I am in the middle of reassembling a 1998 Volvo V70 after a leaking head gasket. I followed the Chilton manual and have run into a snag. As suggested by the manual I went ahead and remove d the camshaft sprockets from the cams figuring they were keyed or otherwise marked for proper reassembly. As I have learned they are not. How do I go about properly aligning the sprockets to the cams?

Thanks
Bryan

Answer
Bryan,
There are special tools that are used to align the cams and lock the engine top dead center. They are installed as the engine is disassembled. So where you are at now is some trial and error. Line everthing up and do the best you can, then turn the engine slowly BY HAND and recheck and realign as needed. I have heard that it can be done, but with some difficulty. Go about it slowly and alway turn the engine over by hand while testing for correct alignment.
