Volvo: Cold Start prblem for 86 240DL, fuel gauge, night temperature

Question
Hello Ray,

I have not been able to start my 240DL when it is cold unless I give it a spray of carbirator cleaner.  It purrs like a kitten and never stalls even when I'm stopped at a lite.  The night temperature has only reached to the low to mid 50's, however would a faulty clod start relay cause this problem or would it be the fuep pump relay?  Does it have to be below freezing for the cold start relay to work?  Maybe neither, but do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Eric,
Make sure your car has a cold start valve, some use a system that used double squirts of fuel when the temps drop. Your temps are cool enough for the cold start to kick in. Put a fuel gauge on and see what the fuel pressure is when this happens. Maybe your fuel pressure is low for some reason. The temp sensor is in the head and sends it's signal to the control unit. Perhaps your sensor is going bad and the control unit always feels the car is at warmer temps.
