Volvo: Volvo 240 Electrical, volvo 240, radio power

Question
I own a 1990 240 volvo with about 120,000 miles. I recently tried to put a new radio in, however it drains the battery after a few days. I purchased a new battery but it still drained. When I hook up the radio to the power from the car it will turn on the radio even when the key is not in the ignition. That led me to believe there is a constant hot which is why when a radio was hooked up it just took all the juice from the battery. Do you have any idea about why it may be getting constant power and will not stop drawing current even when the car is turned off? Thanks Alot, Ryan

Answer
Generally the radio takes two input voltages from the car, one 12V line that only comes on when you turn the key to position 1.  That usually provides the actual power that turns on the radio.  There is a second 12V line that is used to keep minimal power to the radio in order to keep your clock and radio settings saved.  This line is always on, even with the key out.  My guess is that you accidently hooked the always on line to the main radio power, keeping the radio on all the time.  You need to recheck your wiring.  Use a voltmeter on the wires with the key in various positions to identify the always hot line, and the key dependent line.  Good luck!
