Volvo: 240 starter, power steering pump, compressor clutch

Question
when I start my 1991 240 it makes a squealing sound just briefly. I thought it might be the belts but they have been adjusted. Could it be the starter making this noise, if so is replacing it the only thing to do?

Answer
It's rare that the starter would making a squealing noise before it died.  Double check your belts, that the problem 99% of the time.  Also, it could be the bearings on your compressor clutch or power steering pump, so check those.  If it is in fact the starter, then ususally all you can do is replace it.  Sometimes shops will rebuild them, but it's usually so close the cost of a new one, it doesn't pay.  Good luck!
