Volvo: Tach revving high with loss of power, clutch plate, volvo wagon

Question
Hello Jason,

I realize your expertise lies with the 240 series, but Jimmy is away and I am desperate for adivse. I own a 1997 850 volvo wagon, 5 speed, and lately, especially on the highway, the tachometre seems to all of a sudden race, and when I try to accelarate, it just revs and continues to slow down.  It is especially noticable going up hill and gets better when the road levels off.  I appreciate any advise you have.  Thank you,
Cyndi

Answer
Based on your description, it sounds like the clutch plate is not connecting fully.  This can be for one of two reasons, either your clutch petal and hydrolic assembly are out of alignment, or you need a new clutch (they tend to slip as they get older).  I wouldn't be suprised to have to replace the clutch if you have over 100K on your car.  In either case, unless you have the ability and desire to take the transmission out and examine the clutch, you'll have to take it to a mechanic.  If you can get them to drive the car, they should be able to take a look at the petal and tell very quickly if you need an adjustment, or a new clutch all together.  Good luck!
