Volvo: Shifter Bushings, volvo 240, park position

Question
My mechanic replaced the shifter bushings on my 91 Volvo 240. Now the car (3 months later) won't start while the gear shift is in the Park position. I want him to redo the repair, but can't get the car started to get it over to him. Any suggestions?

Answer
The car probably won't start in park because the shifter assembly is out of position enough to trigger the safety sensor which doesn't allow the car to be started if not in P.  One thing you can try is to shift it into neutral and start the car from them.  Depending on the year, it might or might not allow this, but it's worth a shot.  If that doesn't work, you'll have to remove the shifter cover and jiggle the shifter shaft itself in the assembly until you can get it to go far enough into park.  Other than that, you're stuck without starting until the car thinks you're in park.  Good luck!
