Volvo: two parts: heater thermostat and water intrusion, control thermostat, thermostat control

Jason,
The leak is water and not coolant-cups of it. I had to use a wetvac to get it out. Secondly the heater control arm goes directly to the control cable which extends for 1.5 feet+/- to the thermostat control. All is intact in this pathway. Now what?

Re: 1984 240 wagon  Q#1 is what possible intrusion points would allow water to pool into the foam pads under the drivers feet, or the entire drivers side?
#2 is how can I test the thermocouple in the heater control thermostat assly just right of the gas pedal. Seems my heater system is either very hot or cool, only moving the adjuster 1 cm.

The water under the driver's feet is almost always because of a leaking coolant hose that goes to the small heater core buried underneath the center of your dash, right behind the vent blower motor.  It ends up dripping down under the carpet to the lowest points, and in some cars, I've seen it rust through the floorboards because they never noticed the leak, so it's a good idea to get that fixed.  Your thermostat also seems to have the classic volvo problem, they usually break where the control arm from the front meets the variable resistor sitting behind it about 4 inches (again, behind the dash somewhat).  The best way to deal with that problem is to pick up a used one from a junk yard and do a clean replace with yours.  Good luck!

My next question about the water is when and how often it appears on the floorboards.  For that much to get in, there is a clear physical intrusion somewhere.  Does your car sit next to sprinklers?  Has it been raining a lot?  The only water in the car is coolant or windshild wiper fluid.  If the water you find is fresh, there is a hole somewhere letting it in.  Try the air vent on the left driver's side wall.

As for the heater, what I meant for you to test was the thermostat control itself, the physical linkage is usually fine.
