Volvo: 1989 240 Rear Engine Seal, bell housing, stop leak

Question
One more 240 question for you Jason!  I have owned quite a few of these myself and also enjoy working on them.  On my 89 240 automatic, I believe I have a rear engine seal leak.  Can you tell me the process of pulling the Tranny and replaceing this part?  Any special tricks?  Do you know if an oil stop leak treatment would work?

Answer
You can try an oil treatment if you want, but my guess is that it will only offer a temporary solution.  You'll need to eventually replace the seal.  Make sure not to take any long road trips before you replace it.  As for removing the transmission, the first step is to undo the center bearing support, and crossbeam support under the transmission.  This will allow the transmission and engine to tilt back about 5 degrees, and give you room to get to the bolt heads around the bell housing.  With the bolts out, you can pull the transmission strait back and out, giving you room to replace the seal.  Good luck!
