Volvo: 1992 Volvo 740 wagon, metal shavings, volvo 740

Question
I seem to have a problem with my car.  When accelorating the shifting is a bit off.  It will get up to 40 or 45 without shifting at 30 or 35 where it's supposed to.  Or, it just wont shift at all and get up to 60 running in second gear.  Should I replace the transmission?  What is going on?

Thanks,
Josh

Answer
It does sound like you have an internal problem with your transmission, but before replacing it, I would do a fluid flush, sometimes that can fix the problem.  Keep an eye out for metal shavings or a foul smell coming from the drained fluid.  If a fluid flush doesn't fix the problem or makes it worse, you'll probably need to consider a rebuild or complete replacement.  If you have someone else do the work, make sure you take it to a shop that you trust.  Good luck!
