Volvo: 850 Radio fiasco, craig powers, radio model

Question - Jimmy, I can guarantee you that the code is correct and that is not the problem. The procedure, is simply to enter the code and that has worked before. When it worked, I just entered the code and I could hear a 'cycling' sound and it worked fine. Now I enter the code and NOTHING...it just sits with the code in the window. Thanks again.

FYI- I copied this back from a board posting rather than write it again- Thx.

I have a '96 850 with 98K miles. We have owned many Volvos over the years, so I am accustomed to the quirks...

One of the kids left the interior light on and the battery went low, therefore the radio went to 'code'. No problem, I enter the code (I know it's right because I've used it before) and the number just sits there in the window. So I call the dealer- Immediate response- "The radio has failed and you will need to buy a new one". I won't even bother to tell you the ridiculous quote. After seaching boards, etc. I can't find an answer to the problem.

Finally, I give up and bought one on eBay for around $300 (a bargain compared to the dealer quote). It comes, I install it punch in the code and it works great...for about two weeks when the battery gets abused by one of the kids again- SAME PROBLEM with this one too. This is nuts. Searching around the web looking at radio repair sites, they've heard the problem before and refuse to fix them- does anyone out there know what's going on here?

Thanks in advance- Craig Powers

Hello Craig! The radio code you are entering could very well be wrong. Did the new radio come with a code? If you can, please describe the procedure that you are using to enter the code. Also, what does the display say when you enter it? If you can give me the VIN of the car and the serial number off the radio also the radio model and part number. I can get you the correct code.

Answer
It sounds like you got another bad radio. You should get some response from the radio when the code is entered. You should get "rpt" or "off". If there is absolutely no response, the radio is bad. Just double check the new radio code. Ask the person you bought it from to make sure the code is correct. Every radio has its own individual code.
