Volvo: volvo 240 sedan wagon wont start, engine wiring harness, dashboard lights

Question
HELLO I PURCHASED A USED VOLVO 240 SEDAN WAGON  THE CAR DROVE GREAT AND THE ENGINE MADE LITTTLE TO NO  NOISE. AFTER TWO WEEKS A NOTICED A LIGHT COME ON THAT SIGNALED THAT ONE OF THE LIGHTS NEEDED TO GET FIXED. THAN THE WHOLE DASHBOARD LIGHTS WENT SO I WAS DRIVING WITH NO INSIDE LIGHTS THAN THE LIGHTS WENT IN THE AREA WHERE YOU SHIFTS GEARS. THIS MORNING WHEN STARTING THE CAR IT WOULD NOT START I TRIED TO JUMP THE CAR AND IT WOULD NOT TURN OVER. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. THANKS

Answer
I'm guessing that your sedan is older than 1988.  In that case, it sounds like your engine wiring harness is going bad, meaning that the under-hood wiring is beginning to flake and short, which will cause random light problems and no starting.  I would thoroughly examine the wires and patch what you can, but in the end, you're going to have to replace the whole thing to avoid constant shorting problems.  Good luck!
