Volvo: 1990 240DL A/C compressor, ac compressor, hayne

Question
Hello Jason,
My 1990 240 DL has quit on me. I have determined that the problem is the AC compressor or possibly the clutch/pulley assembly on the compressor(the belts move but the pulleys do not). I can crank the car and it runs and you can see that the pulleys are not turning. Is it possible it could be the clutch/pulley assembly? Is there a way to check/replace the clutch/pulley assembly and could you please tell me how? I would hate to replace the compressor only to find out that I could have saved myself the time and money and could have only replaced the clutch/pulley assembly. Thanks in advance for any help you could give.

Answer
Because the car is a 1990, I doubt the compressor itself has seized; more likely that the clutch has failed on the front pully.  It just involves undoing the belts and unbolting the pully from the front and replacing the throwout clutch on the inside.  To get more step by step instructions for that procedure, I would recommend picking up a Hayne's manual for the 240.  They have detailed instructions on just about anything you can do to the car yourself.  Good luck!
