Volvo: volvo sensor problems, time volvo, sensor problems

Question
Thinking about getting a x70, s60, or other volvo for me or my son. I used to be a mechanic, so like the 5 cylinder with some flavor turbo. Have been reading some about various sensor problems. Do you have any general guidance about models to stay away from?

Answer
I think it is all going to depend on what year and how much you are looking to spend.  I don't know much about the new series of Volvo, but if you have your heart set on a 5 cylinder transmount flavor, I would recommend staying away from the 850 series; it was the first time Volvo used 5 cylinder, and they were plagued with issues.  Based on my experience as a volunteer on this site, I would also stay away from the s-series, as they seemed to be plagued with the "sensor issues" you speak of.  I think of what you mentioned, the x-series probably has the best reputation.

I'm personally a fan of the rear wheel drive Volvos, the later models being the 740 and 940.  They definetly have a better reputation for being more reliable, using the rock solid B230 4 cylinder engine and its derivatives.  Many of those models were also turbo charged, and will offer similar performance with what I think is a better drivetrain.  Just a thought.  Good luck!
