Volvo: 1990 760 Turbo, socket wrenches, minute rest

Question
I had Just purchased the car off of guy and was heading home when I noticed the head lights getting dim. Then the  ABS and Anti-lock brake warning lights lit up on the dash. The engine quit running (stalled) shortly after that. The idiot light never came on indicating a problem with the alternator. Yet when I turn the ignition key to the start postion the light will illuminate. I was able to restart the car after about a 10 minute rest. I was able to drive it a few miles and park safely. The engine would not restart again. I suspect faulty alternator or brushes. Because the car is 130 miles from the house, I plan to pickup rebuilt alternator and take the voltage regulator off of my daughter's 88 740 turbo and see if they match up for a replacement. I'll take a digital multi meter also. Any other thoughts?  The car has a new battery.

Answer
Other than remembering a good set of socket wrenches for the job, I'd say you're on the right track.  You'll also probably need a jump after the alternator replacement.  Make sure to properly tension the new alternator on its slide holes after installation to get the drive belt tight enough.  Being too loose will burn through the belt quick and you'll have a new problem.  Other than that, I would expect a pretty straitforward swap.  Good luck!
