Volvo: oil burning, rear main oil seal, volvo dealership

Question
I have a 1996 Volvo 850 (turbo, 105,00 miles) that has
started to burn (a lot) oil.  I brought it into my mechanic
and he put in 3 quarts.  It had been about 2500 miles since
the last oil and filter change.  The next day (I drove approx.
30 miles), I filled up with gas and checked the oil - and the
car needed another quart!  Does this mean I may need a
new engine?!

This summer, I brought it to a Volvo dealership since I was
out-of-state and needed service.  They told me I needed to
replace the rear main oil seal but my mechanic has not
found any evidence of leaking oil.    I did have them replace
the turbo seals.  Is any of this related?

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hello Pam! You first need to determine if the car is leakig or burning the oil. A rear main seal leak would be very easy for an experienced Volvo technician to see. A leaking turbo return line seal could give someone the impression that the rear main seal is leaking. I would take the car to a qualified Volvo technician for a proper diagnosis. There could be a leak or the turbo could be using oil.
I hope this info helps you.
