Volvo: Volvo Wet-weather starting problems, wet weather, battery terminals

Question
We have a 1985 240GL Sedan Volvo and have for a number of years had a wet weather cold start problem. The engine is hard to start after a rain and when started it will not idlle until the engine has warmed up.  Then everything is fine.  During normal weather conditions theree is no problem.  I have had numerous Volvo people examine the problem and try to fix it but it still persists.  We live in Australia so the weather, outside of being rainy, is not often cold. Can you give us any ideas?

Answer
Generally wet start issues have to do with something electrical.  Condensation builds up in a few key areas, like the connectors at the coil, or inside the distributor cap, or even at the battery terminals.  There aren't any secrets to find the problem, but before you start the car after it has rained, I would look in all the key electrical places for condensation.
