Volvo: 1987 Volvo quit running, volvo 740 gle, fuel pump relay

Question
We have a 1987 Volvo 740 Gle 4cy.  We bought it brand new and have kept it serviced and never had any problems with it.  It has 130,000 miles on it.  A couple years ago it would just die while driving...you could put it in neutral and it would restart and be fine.  We started having the fuel filter changed more often and this seemed to correct the problem for awhile.  A week ago, the car did the same thing except it never would start.  My husband changed the fuel filter and got the wiring sch. on our car and our regular mechanic said it was probably the fuel pump relay...part #1323592.  Ordered it online put it in and let the car set and run about 45 minutes.  Drove the car out on the road....died about a mile down the road and never would start.  We've read everything we can in our manual about this problem but just can't seem to figure it out.  Hope you can help.
Thanks,
Dee

Answer
Hello Dee! That can be caused by many things. SOme of the more common parts are the power stage, injection relay, hall effect switch in the distributor. Just to name a few. The best advice I can give you is to have the car checked out by someone who knows Volvo. Sometimes it is worth the extra money to get the problem fixed.
