Volvo: volvo that wont start, unit thanks, electronic devices

Question
-------------------------
Followup To I checked the wires thoughly couldn't fine anythig. Any chance it could be a bad ignition control unit? What is an ignition control unit? Thanks Mike
Question -
Have an 89 240 sedan 150,000 miles. Won't start and has no spark at the coil. Replaced the coil still no spark. While I was working on it, the coil gave a good spark the car started but then died, and again there was no spark. Any ideas? thanks Mike
Answer -
The next step is to continue tracing back the wire from the coil.  I've found that sometimes there is a break in the wiring insulation, causing the current to arc onto the frame of the car when you crank it.  Listen for a sharp snapping sound as you crank, that would be an indicator the current is shorting somewhere.

Answer
It's possible the ignition control unit could be bad, however, from what I've learned in the past, it is rare for them to fail.  Unfortunetly you've gone beyond my area of expertise because the 89 has quite a few more electronic devices governing the ignition than early 1980's Volvos.  I would suggest you post your question at www.brickboard.com, as there are many there with experience regarding the later 80's electronics and where to check next with your particular problem.  It's a free website and you'll get the info you need within a day.  Sorry I couldn't help further!
