Volvo: Replacing plastic Auto Shift cover, auto shift, roll pin

Please tell me how to remove/replace the plastic auto shift cover in my 1988 240 GL. Cannot figure out how to get around or remove the shift knob. Any explanation appreciated.  Thanks

Hello Nona! That can be a very difficult job. The shifter knob must be removed. In order to remove it, you must take out the shifter button and the attached rod. It connects inside the shifter bucket with a small roll pin. I would suggest that a Volvo technician do the job.
