Volvo: 1983 Volvo 240DL Wont Start, volvo 240 dl, fuel pressure regulator

Question
My 1983 Volvo 240 DL wagon was running fine until just recently.  I went on a 3 week trip, and when I returned it wouldn't start.  It turns over just fine, but won't fire.  Typically it starts right off.  I think it is flooding.  When I first cranked it, it sputtered briefly then died.  I gave it 2 quick pumps on the gas pedal (like I often do) and cranked it again, but after extended cranking it wouldn't start.  I waited a few minutes and then without touching the gas pedal it finally started and ran smoothly.  But 20 minutes later when I returned home, when I pulled into the driveway the engine died at idle while the transmission was in drive.  Then when I tried to restart the engine, it wouldn't start.  Only this time when I waited, it still wouldn't start.  So, I slept on it and tried the next morning and it still won't start.  I lifted the hood and looked over the vacuum hoses--they all appeared to be okay.  I removed 2 of the spark plugs and they were both wet with gasoline, but very clean--no crud.  And then I noticed gasoline seeping out from where the exhaust pipe connects to the exhaust manifold.  So obviously, plenty of gas.  Any ideas on what the problem might be, or how I might proceed troubleshooting?
Like I said, the car had been running beautifully, no smoking, very smooth and strong.  No major engine repairs have been done--has always been a reliable car.
Thanks.

Answer
Hello William! It sounds like there is WAY too much gas being injected into the engine. You should not see gas dripping from the exhaust. There may be a problem with the fuel pressure regulator or injectors. It is best to tow the car to a qualified Volvo technician ASAP. I would not try to start the car until it is looked at by a pro. I hope this info helps.
