Volvo: 1988 740 GLE, proper diagnosis, power stage

Question
I have few problems.  The biggest is the fact that it only starts when it wants to.  it turns over well and the fuel pump is working, but it acts like it isn't getting any gas.  Then when it does start, when i take it out and give it gas it bogs down.  Sometimes it will even stall.  Other times the rpms go up and down and up and down...  It can't deside if it wants to stall or run.  It is very weird.  I think part of it is the fuel injectors.  What do you think?
The other problem is over-drive.  It will not shift into over drive.  Before it would shift up, but only after a significant amount of warming up time.  Now it won't at all.  If it does it's a miracle.  Can you help?
I want to fix it myself, so if you could be detail I would appreciate it.  Thank you for your time!

Answer
Hello Angela! It is tough to fix without a proper diagnosis. All I can tell you is the more common problems that I have seen. I would check the power stage(igntion module) and I would check the overdrive relay. I cant type too much detail. It would be best to get a manual for your car at www.volvotechinfo.com
