Volvo: Brake Booster on 1999 S80, home mechanic, turbo models

Question
Hello,

My 1999 S80 has a hissing coming from the
brake booster at times. It happens when I
use the brakes many times in a short time.

Like stuck in stop and go traffic, I can
make it stop hissing by litely touching
  the brake pedal.

The car stops fine, I am a pretty competent
home mechanic, is there a check valve or
something small that I can replace that
will stop this? or will the entire booster
need replacing? if so, can I replace it
myself or are special tools and knowledge
needed to replace the booster correctly?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Hello Jeff! The brake booster will have to be replaced. It is very common for the S80. It can be a tough job. It is in a very tight spot. The non- turbo is a lot easier the the turbo models. No special tools are needed. If you are are mechanically inclined, you should be able to handle it. Although, I would leave the job to a qualified Volvo Technician.
