Driving & Driving Test Tips: Driving Test, state police station, connecticut driver

Question
hi, I'm going for my driving test a week from today and i have a few questions. I'm 19 so i don't have a permit because in Connecticut, being over 18 is the same as having a permit. i have the driver's manual and i have been driving many hours but theres some things I'm unsure of.

1. when a car in front of you signals to turn left, am i allowed to pass them on the right (as most everyone does) or should i slow down and wait behind them for them to turn?

2. for a 3-point turn, do i need to use either one of my signals? if so, when?

3. what is the normal range of speed i should stay in for my test? normally if the speed is 25 mph then i will go between 20-30, obviously trying my best to stay around 25. i know that i probably shouldn't go over 27 but do you know if there is a certain cutoff point where i would be failed?

thank you so much!

Answer
First, Go to the site below and you can get the drivers booklet, you can also get one at any DMV licensing station, and probably at any state police station.

The booklet should answer any questions you have, if not, there are contacts listed on the web site and they can answer the questions.  I will try some basic logic on your questions, but understand, you should go to Conn. DMV for the exact answers, I live in Illinois and the two may have some differences.

1.  Car in front turning left.  This depends on the road you are on.  If you have two or more lanes to use, and there is no left turn lane, then the proper thing to do would be to check for cars beside or behind you, signal a lane change to the right and carefully go around.  If you have a one lane road with no "passing lane" marked, then you must wait behind for the car to turn.  I know lots of people will use a parking lane, or go into the intersection to go around, but if there isn't a clearly marked legal driving lane, I would say you can NOT go around.

2.  By 3 point turn, I assume you mean you are turning around?   You might need to use your emergency flashers, because you will be going both left and right.  check the DMV booklet or ask a state trooper or the licensing station personnell.

3.  Stay AT or BELOW the posted limit at all times!  Don't assume you have 3 mph or so to give.  the limit is the limit and police can ticket legally at anything, even .5 mph above the limit.  Yes, police usually give 3-7 mph but your examiner will be watching your speed like a hawk.  Even to keep up with traffic flow, you should not exceed the limit.

On the other hand, don't go a LOT below the limit.  if you are more than 5 mph below the limit, it might slow up traffic and indicate you are not comfortable with driving, and that could hurt scores.  Don't go over the limit, stay with the flow of traffic otherwise, for instance, if the limit is 25 and traffic is slow because of an accident or other problem, don't TRY to keep close to the limit.  use common sense.
