Driving & Driving Test Tips: Backing up my Camry, mirror section, towing supplies

Question
Driving, in general, is no problem.  Am considered a good driver.  However, my nemisis is backing up.  Cannot seem to use mirrors properly.  Need some tips on how to accomplish backing up without hitting obstacles or wandering off path.  Thanks.

Answer
First thing is that when backing up you should really be looking over both shoulders to help you back up.  If that isn't possible (neck problems etc) then using the mirrors and turning your head to look to the sides as much as possible is your other option.

First, adjust the mirrors so that you can see out of them well.

Center inside mirror.

Adjust so you see out the middle of the back window.

Side mirrors:

adjust so you can just barely see the side of the car, and that you can see the road.  Hopefully you have electric mirrors, if not, have someone help you adjust them.

Suggestion:  Go to an auto parts store and check out their mirror section (you can also go to a camper supply store that sells towing supplies) and find a few convex mirrors.

I have these on both my outside mirrors, a small one on the drivers side and a slightly bigger one on the outside on the right.  I also on one car have a small one on the right side of the inside mirror.

Once you get these and get used to seeing things in them they are a GREAT help in seeing everything around you.

Finally, practice/practice/practice.  I suggest you go to a big empty parking lot, and get some tall construction rubber cones.  You may be able to borrow some from your city street department if you ask nice.

Have someone place these so that you can practice backing in several situations.

Backing out of a parking space where you pull straight in and out.

Backing out of an angled parking space

Parallel parking

and any other situation that is bothering you.

Keep practicing till you feel more confident.  Don't be afraid to slowly touch these cones (or build something fairly light and soft that is tall enough to see) so you know where the ends and sides of the car are actually at.

Good luck
