Driving & Driving Test Tips: Volume of vehicles on U.S. highways, county engineer, tune ups

Question
Hi Mark, I am a County Engineer. I am being pressured by elected officials to suggest methods to "solve" the world's environmental problems. I possess the ability to think further "out of the box" than they imagine and I would like to run a quick calculatiion of how much auto fuel could be saved on a daily basis if everyone drove with their lights off during the daylight hours. I need an estimate of how many vehicles are driving on U.S. highways at any given time. Thanks for any information you can provide.

Answer
vehicle estmates are best found though the U.S. dept of transportation.  I can tell you the amount saved by not using head lights is miniscule compared to the safety of friving with them on.  you would be betteroff to make sure all vehicles got proper tune ups, now you would really be saving fuel.
