Driving & Driving Test Tips: best friend driving, two different things, bad vision

Question
Hi!

I really need your help. My best friend needs to go for his license, but there is one problem. He wears glasses and has issues with his sight. He can see (I mean, he van do everything normal people can do, he only has impared vision). He is really stressed out that he wont be able to get his license. I want to know if its possible for him to get it? I mean, he describes himself as half blind, but he can do everything I can, just with less clear vision. Ofcourse I cant tell how bad it is, and therefor I can't tell him he will be all right. I am afraid, however, that he is overreacting to the issue and being overly pessimistic as to being overly optemistic. I know this probably isn't the type of question you are used to, but I really need advice.

Thanks alot for your time

Answer
I am not an eye doctor so there is no way I can answer if your friend can get a license or not.

If he is worried, I would recommend he visit his eye doctor, get an exam with the goal of making sure he has the proper glasses that will help him pass his test.

I am not sure about your state, but I know of people that have to wear those glasses that have little telescopes, that stick WAY out to let them see.  They have very poor vision, but with the right glasses, they can pass a test.

He will have to pass a vision test with a typical eye chart in one of those machines.  (at least that is the way it is in my state) and those tests are pretty easy to pass.

My father, in his last years had real bad vision, and we were actually hoping he would not pass his test as he was getting pretty bad on the road.  But at the test center, they gave him the test several times and he was able to eventually memorize the test and pass it!

We had to take his driving privilege away ourselves in that case.  So anything is possible.

But seeing to function and seeing to drive can be two different things.
