Driving & Driving Test Tips: engine cut-off, work cars, nissan primera

Question
i have a 1992 nissan primera 1.6,sometimes upon start up i need to step on the gas to avoid engine cut-off,i already used fuel system cleaner..the mechanic said i need to replace the carburettor

Answer
Computer controlled carburetors can be very expensive, be sure to get a firm quote before you decide to do this, depending on how nice the car it it could cost much more than the car is worth to replace the carb.

On the other hand, even if your car may not be worth much, if it is in good shape otherwise, it could be worth saving.  I have been looking for good "work" cars for my son lately, and trying to find anything under $2000 that is safe and somewhat reliable that doesn't need a lot of work is hard to do. So balance your needs versus your budget and what your future plans are for transportation.

A simple tune-up might help, plugs, check filters, check the emissions system etc.  How long since a new fuel filter?  I would start with new plugs unless they have been changed very recently.  This is something you can easily do yourself.
