Driving & Driving Test Tips: Question regarding snow chains, snow questions, snow chains

Question
Hi Dan,
My son,(who is also named Dan)has recently moved to Santa Fe, NM from the desert of Phoenix, AZ.
Since he is not use to driving in the snow I am always worried about him driving in it. I suggested he get some snow chains, but someone told him you don't need them if you have front wheel drive.  Is this correct?  He says his car slides around quite a bit anytime he tries to stop.  Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Peggy

Answer
Good question. All wheel drive and 4 wheel drive help in the snow, yet the best advice is not to drive in the snow if you can help it. Chains are in some states illegal to use on public roads. Depends on how bad the roads are and that would tell you if four wheel drive is good enough or he needs something else. I recommend asking in his local area for I don't deal with snow questions much. I can't really say what I recommend. Good luck and sorry. Happy Holidays
