Driving & Driving Test Tips: Driving in snow country, driving on icy roads, safety precaution

Question
Hi Michael,
I just moved from California to Colorado. Can you give me some tips on driving on icy roads? A few days ago I was going up a slight incline and my car barely moved. What should I have done?
Thanks,
Stephanie

Answer
Stephanie-

Driving in snow has some unique challenges, doesn't it?

Many people try to "power" their way through ice and snow by spinning their tires.  Try to avoid this at all costs.  Not only do you not get very far, but you melt the top ice.  It then refreezes and glazes over, making the road even slicker.  So when you are going up an incline, try to go into it with a little speed.  That way your momentum will give you a hand.  Increase the pressure on the gas very slightly, almost like squeezing it.  If you hear or feel the tires spin, let up on the gas till it stops.  Then repeat.

Here are a few other suggestions I thought of:

-Check the tires to make sure they have good tread and depth.
-You may want to invest in snow tires; not only will you get better traction, but your tires will last longer.
-Go to a shop that gives free inspections like Car-X and have the brakes and suspension looked at.  This will give you better braking and road holding ability.
-If your car has rear-wheel drive, put some extra weight in the back.  This will help balance the car and give better traction.
-Carry some salt or sand for traction in your vehicle.
-As I am sure you know, a cell phone for emergencies and plenty of gas in your tank is a good safety precaution.

Let me know if this helps. Congrats on your move.

Michael
